What Would "The Bold & The Beautiful" Stars Do in South Africa?

by Sonya Harding

The Bold and The Beautiful, which started airing in 1987, won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series for the second consecutive last year.

The Bold and The Beautiful generates an estimated viewership of 35 million daily viewers in more than 100 countries, and for the fifth consecutive year, it remains the most watched series in the world.

Stars from The Bold & The Beautiful, Brandon Beemer (Owen), Jacqueline MacInnes Wood (Steffy) and Jack Wagner (Nick) recently went to visit South Africa as part of a promotional tour for the soap opera.

So what does one do on such a tour? Relax on the beach and do a little shopping?

No time for that, as their schedule proves:

Saturday, 19 February 2011:

Arrival in Johannesburg. Would they be recognized and mobbed you might wonder? In Brandon Beemer's words, "When we walked through arrivals in Joburg, I saw people looking and whispering, and some people connected the dots, but luckily it wasn't a mob scene. It was actually sweet".

Hit Joburg Fashion Week. Here Jacqueline MacInnes Wood (Steffy) models in David Tlale's show. Brandon and Jack Wagner went along, but spies spotted Jack nodding off in the front row. Hopefully just exhaustion and not boredom.

Today the fans get their turn to see the Bold stars at the Eastgate shopping centre. This turned chaotic as too many people pitched, more than expected, and the stars had to be whisked away for their safety. In the words of Brandon Beemer, "... things almost got out of hand, as so many fans had turned up to meet us! I don't think we were aware of how popular The Bold And The Beautiful is among South African fans."

Next was a visit to Maponya Mall, which was less troublesome. This was followed by a trip to an orphanage to Soweto.

One of the highlights for Jacqueline was: "Visiting Soweto and seeing where Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu grew up. I was speechless."

Our stars are still soaking up the sights and sounds of the Gauteng province. Today they stop at the Rhino and Lion Nature reserve. This proved to be Brandon Beemer's favorite memory:

"I saw lion cubs, played with cheetahs, and touched baby rhinos. I don't get to do that back in L.A., so being so close to the animals took my breath away. It was just so beyond anything I've ever done."

He claims to even have texted his current girlfriend, Nadia Bjorlin who plays Chloe in Days Of Our Lives, about it:

"She is so jealous of me being here! I'm probably nasty, but I'll text her saying 'I just played with lion cubs', just to rub it in, and she'll text back saying 'You're making me so jealous!'. Hopefully next time I'll bring her with."

Our stars have lunch at Kloofzicht.

It is probably here where Jacqueline eats her new favorite South African food, Oxtail.

Our stars have now moved over from Gauteng to the Southern tip of South Africa. In Cape Town, Brandon, Jacqueline and Jack visit the Expresso studios in Seapoint, hit Camps Bay beach with tvplus magazine, then meet fans at Canal Walk shopping centre and visit the top of Table Mountain.

"I want to live here", said Jacqueline.

Moving along to Durban. After a signing at teh Pavillion shopping centre, our Bold people had cocktails on a yacht in Durban harbour. Afterwards, dropping in at DJ Tira's house Jacqueline discussed recording house music with DJ Tira. Tira took the cast bar-hopping at a variety of hotspots where they swigged Moet champagne.

Still recovering from their night out, our stars go to the lavish Phinda Game Reserve for one last glimpse of African wildlife before they jet back to Hollywood.

What souvinirs will Brandon be taking back for Nadia?

"I haven't had a chance to do any shopping as yet, because we've been so busy. But I think all the photos and videos will be more than enough to share my experience in South Africa with her. Until I bring her with next time!"

A busy week indeed!

More excerpts about the Bold stars and their South African tour:

Jacqueline (23), one of the younger cast members of the show, said she enjoyed the warm beaches in SA.

"The waters in Cape Town are a little bit cold but Durban's water was great to swim in," she said.

For her, being in SA was "magical" and she was enjoying seeing all the cities and meeting her fans.

"I didn't realise the show had such a huge following outside of the US and it's always great to be recognised for the work you do! Everywhere I go here people have recognised me and I've enjoyed so many places including having drinks and dinner at Moyo in Johannesburg and lunch and Cafe Caprice in Cape Town."

While Brandon and Jacqueline were enjoying the plush surroundings of Camps Bay, fellow soapie star Wagner was spotted working out at the gym at a top hotel. He didn't seem to hang out with his co-stars, who clearly enjoyed being on the beach in their swimwear, rather keeping a low profile.

So what's been their favourite part of Africa? "I can't believe there are no paparazzi like in the US!" admitted Beemer.

"The food is just as great here too and I am in love with SA. I can't wait to return to visit with Nadia in the near future."

Was there anything negative about their visit?  Probably just the event at Eastgate Shopping Centre where a horde of fans pitched, as this news exceprt attest:

Benoni resident Kate Frangoudis (54) injured her wrist and leg when a group of people pushed her.

She said it happened just as the TV stars arrived at the shopping centre and people started pushing and shoving to get close to the actors.

According to Frangoudis there were barriers to keep the crowd at a distance.  The barriers did not last very long, as the crowd saw the actors and swarmed them.

Tyrone van den Berg from ER24 who was on duty at Eastgate said he treated two more people with light injuries: an eight-year-old girl with a head injury and a 14-year-old girl with a knee injury.

According to Van den Berg the shopping centre's management did not inform emergency services that the actors will be visiting the shopping centre.

"If I knew beforehand, I would have organised more paramedics to be on duty with me."

Well, you can't make an omlet without... naah :)  The South African public loves you, what can we say?

Thanks to the Bold and Beautiful stars who bring joy to South Africans, on TV as well as off.
